We need the summer break, but only because we're weird. We live on a farm and May- August is intense garden and canning work.

We started our 'school year' at the end of August. First year with Sonlight!

We've done 3 (or is it 4??) weeks so far but SHEESH is it hard to concentrate when it's so dadgum hot. No a/c here and yes, I'm feeling like a pansy...If I was really smart I'd get everyone up and be schooling by 6 am and done by 11ish so we could melt in the afternoons, but then that would mean I would have to get up around 4 to have the brain engaged and I. just. can't. do. that. No...I could; I'm just refusing to. There, it's clarified. :)

Kelly-- I think the Sept-June thing was made just for Ohio and similar places, you are so right that it's perfect for you. It's kind of like the children's books about seasons-- they don't make any sense down here in Texas.

TexasHeather-- you got it, in TX I have mostly schooled year-round, usually taking advantage of July to get a LOT of school done. Maybe that's why I'm feeling so "off" right now-- for the last 10 years, by September we have 6 weeks of school under our belts so I feel fairly accomplished. In the past we've taken a trip to Galveston beach about this time of year. But this summer got away from me and we haven't done any "school" since *cough cough* before Mother's Day. ;)

Karen (KayKay) I didn't want to do it yesterday but today I feel much better! Ready to hit the tarp running. Of course I had to force myself out of bed this morning and run a couple errands with my teenager. I think spending that time with him this morning did energize me. And knowing folks are coming over in an hour or so.

Down here in Brazil, we school Feb to Nov, with a break off for S. Hemisphere Summer in Dec/Jan. The kids also get a mid-year break in July. It's really a great system, and we'll likely keep it up when we move back to the US one day.

What system would you follow if you had your preference?(when we were in TX we schooled more or less year round, with more days off when we could enjoy the weather than when we needed the A/C to keep comfy...)

I love the Sept.-June calendar. I need that break in the summer for my body to recover from the horrible 8 months of nasty weather. Although this summer was nasty and I really haven't had any break in feeling horrible. Oh joy.

So today we are starting school. And it's a great day to start. Rain, gray, rain, dark, rain, cold all day and all week until Friday. So glad we delayed and enjoyed the gorgeous sunny, dry, warm weather last week :)
