I've been going bananas at the store lately

Locally grown watermelon is my shopping cart staple now, but for a long time bananas fed my kids. The prices have been going up, and I had read some nasty stuff about how bananas are grown by exploiting an entire continent, so bananas have become more rare at our house. I did buy 4 bunches the other day, though, and they were almost gone in 36 hours. There are 2 left, and they are going all brown so will make a great smoothie.

Here is an article that explains well what is going on with bananas. And after you read it, be sure to check out my friend Sarah's blog (look on the left sidebar) for her explanation of just how nutritious a nice local watermelon is.

Wow. That is really interesting. Makes me wish -- for the umpteenth bizillionth time -- that it was easier to garden, here in the desert.
