This year, we're getting more tax rebate than we'd anticipated because of this economic "stimulus" thing. We had increased our deductions so that we don't normally get much rebate, so this is totally unexpected bonus money.
I know many people are thinking about how to spend the money that is coming from, presumably, taxpayers.
Would you go Green with the green?
My husband has filled out forms online and has us scheduled for a visit by Austin Energy--- for a rebate program for installing solar panels on our roof. Austin Energy has a goal of 15 megawatts of solar by 2010.
Anyhow, that is how we plan to spend our tax rebate. Combined with Austin Energy's rebate program we should be able to get at least 1000kw system. It should reduce our electric consumption by 18%.
What could you do to use the green (tax rebate) to go a bit more Green?
We also just signed up for Green Choice by Austin Energy-- it locks us into a rate for wind power for 5 years, and replaces the "fuel tax" added to the energy bill. Right now it costs a bit more than the fuel surcharge, but the rate is locked in for 5 years, so even though it costs us something like $18 more a month now, in a few years it should be cheaper. Other Green things we're working on-- this week we're getting a tankless water heater installed.
